About

Matthew Thomas is self-taught photographer and a qualified ecologist. He specialises in plant and garden photography and can regularly be found walking the hills of his native Sussex.

For Matthew, photography is first and foremost a time to relax and enjoy life but he has been fortunate enough to do quite well in several photographic awards. These include the BBC Countryfile photo competition and the International Garden Photographer of the Year. His photographs regularly appear in magazines and books worldwide, including features in 'Sussex Life' and 'Country Life'.

The Race in an exceptional avenue of some 95 veteran Sweet Chestnut. It extends for about a kilometre (0.7 miles), north-east from the A272 at the outskirts of Easebourne, before disappearing into Oaters Wood.

Veteran Beech, Chanctonbury

Girth: 5m
Approximate age: 250 years

The distinguishing feature of this tree is its remarkable root system, which is almost completely exposed. It grows on a steep slope of eroded chalk.

The Chanctonbury Beech is adjacent to the Wiston Bostal Public Bridleway, and accessible to passing walkers.

Ancient Yew, Wilmington

Girth: 9.5m
Approximate age: 1,000 years +

The ancient yew at Wilmington (a female) predates the adjacent church of St Mary and St Peter by perhaps 800 years.

The tree was probably already mature when King Aelle of the Saxons established Wilmington as a fortified hill village in the 5th Century.

Today she has two gigantic trunks which may have split from a single origin and are now held together by an impressively large, rusted chain.

Parham Oaks #1

Comphurst Wood, Wartling

Girth: Up to 8m
Approximate age: 300 years

Fragmented, linear groups of veteran Sweet Chestnut trees line the route of the medieval, northern approach to Herstmonceux Castle, near Battle. These trees are at the northern end, near Comphurst Wood. They were probably planted by Sir Thomas Lennard in the 17th Century.

Hornbeam, Herstmonceux

Approximate age: 1,500 years?

This ancient Hornbeam began life as a single trunk, and through successive coppice cycles over centuries, became fragmented into a ring of genetically identical siblings. It may well date back to the original 'wildwood'.

The Danny Oak

Girth: 10.5m
Approximate age: 1,200 years

This ancient English Oak can be found on a sandy hummock in Danny Park, near Hurstpierpoint. The Park of Danny was enclosed by the last Sir Simon de Pierpoint in 1343, but this tree predates that, to the age of the Saxons.

Cowdray Oaks

Girth: Up to 8.7m
Approximate age: 800 years +

Cowdray Golf Course has several ancient Sessile Oaks (Quercus patraea) which date at least from medieval times when the park was managed for hunting.

Unlike the English Oak (Q. robur), the Sessile Oak has been rarely planted and is normally confined to ancient woodland.

Ancient Ash, Sheepwash Farm

Girth: Up to 8.5m

Ash are pioneer trees that quickly colonise new ground and then give way to the longer-lived species. But when they are repeatedly coppiced, they can live much longer. This ancient Ash coppice stool survives on a medieval boundary bank near Wisborough Green.

Burton Park Chestnut

This is the second largest Sweet Chestnut tree in Sussex, but despite its huge size, is no more then 350 years old. Recent research has established that Sweet Chestnut were first introduced to the UK in the 17th Century.

Ancient Yew trees are notoriously difficult to age because of their variable growth rate but local tradition suggests this Yew was planted when Stopham Church was first built in the 11th century.

Petworth Park

Girth: Up to 8.0m
Approximate age: 250 years +

Petworth Park was transformed in the 1750s and early 1760s by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The veteran Sweet Chestnuts in this photograph were almost certainly planted at this time. Other trees in the park predate the 18th Century landscaping by hundreds of years.

This huge Cedar grows adjacent to the oldest cricket ground in the world, at Goodwood. It was planted by the 3rd Duke of Richmond in 1761.

Caucasian Wingnut, Highfields

Girth: Up to 8.8m
Approximate age: 200+ years

According to the Ancient Tree Inventory, this is the largest surviving Caucasian Wingnut (Pterocarya fraxinifolia) in the UK. It must have been one of the first to be planted, following its introduction in the 1780s.

Giant Sequoia, Cuckfield

The Giant Sequoia was introduced to Britain from North America in 1860 and are already some of the largest trees in the country.
This tree can be found in the churchyard at Cuckfield and is the largest of its species in Sussex.

The Cowdray Colossus

Girth: 12.4m
Approximate age: 350 years
OS Grid Reference: SU 916,229
This is the largest Sweet Chestnut in Britain and the second largest single-stemmed tree in Sussex (beaten only by the Queen Elizabeth Oak, in the same field). Despite its huge size, recent research has established that Sweet Chestnut were introduced to Britain towards the end of the 17th Century, so it can be not much more than 350 years old.

The Lady in Waiting

This huge Sessile Oak (Quercus patraea) is dwarfed only by the even larger Queen Elizabeth Oak, which is in the same field. Both trees date to before the Norman invasion and probably to the original 'wildwood' that would have covered most of Sussex before people began to farm the county.

The Constable Road Hawthorn

This huge, old Common Hawthorn is the largest of its species in Sussex. It can be found on a road verge in suburban Crawley and must have been preserved by a sympathetic urban planner.

The Greentrees Giant

This huge Beech tree grew on a boundary bank at Greentrees Farm, near Balcombe. One of the largest Beech in the UK, it completely collapsed in summer 2020 and is no more.

The Sun Oak

The Sun Oak is a well-known landmark on Hampers Lane and has been for several centuries. It is said to have derived its name from an old Inn (long gone) that stood nearby.

The Stedham Yew

This ancient Yew tree grows in the churchyard of St James' Church, Stedham. It is completely hollow and the trunk is large enough to sit comfortably inside!

Kingley Vale is steeped in history and legend and the origin of this grove of gnarled, old Yews has been lost in time. One account suggests that they were planted following the defeat of a Viking raid by the Saxons in the 9th Century.

The Coldwaltham Yew

The Coldwaltham Yew is the largest Yew tree in Sussex. It lurks at the back of Coldwaltham Churchyard, near the old Roman road of Stane Street and could well date from Roman times, or even earlier.

The Petworth Oak

Although beaten in girth by the Danny Oak, this is easily the most massive English Oak (Quercus robur) in Sussex, with huge, towering stems which are still growing quite vigorously. It can be found in Petworth Park and must have survived the extensive landscaping that took place there in the 18th Century.

The oldest surviving English Elm in the world are 'The Preston Twins'. They grow at the northern end of Preston Park, near the old London to Brighton road. They were probably part of an old hedgerow when the Park was established in 1871.
